| I'm not as hardcore a collector as you, but here's my (very simple) rubric for selling things: If I like less than 50% of the songs on a CD, it's gone, provided that it doesn't hold some other intangible value (for example, even though I never listen to it, I can't sell Santana's Abraxas because it was the first CD I ever bought). If a movie doesn't make me think or affect me on a base level even after multiple viewings (movies like Gladiator or The Abyss), it's gone. I also sell VHS that I'd one day like to obtain on DVD. In the case of more valuable things you can sell on eBay, I come up with a minimum acceptable sale price, then look at comparable items on the market, and if they're selling for the minimum price or more, I list the item. Seems to work, and I have very few regrets about the stuff I've sold. |
| My own rationale is based upon use. If I'm not going to listen to an album or watch a movie or read a book often enough to justify it taking up space in my apartment (obviously a subjective judgment), it's gone no matter how much I like it. I have had a few false positives (one CD I think I've bought four times now), but for the most part I don't regret it, especially with movies and books which if I want to see/read them one more time I can always rent them or go to the library. |

| No magic formula here. Still trying to figure out mine. How long do I hang on to my sealed Jellyfish box set? I waited too long on Boomtown Rats "Fine Art of Surfacing?" Who knew Webb Wilder's "Doo Dad" was worth $35.00? |
| Webb Wilder? Really? Damn. About a year ago, I sold a Fax CD (you know, Pete Namlook's ambient electronica stuff that was really big about a decade ago) to some crazy guy in some Scandinavian country for well over $400. And another one to someone else for around $250. Insane. But hence, you can see my hesitiation to let go of things at the wrong time or at the wrong place -- because I had sold probably 10 other Fax titles over the years for like $2 a piece at my local Record Exchange. AAAAAAAH! I could be driving a new Jag on the back of that shit now!!! |
