| While the film is admittedly a bit unoriginal and a bit contrived, it is more than MTV and less than indie. It's kind of a hybrid between the two, with some scenes serving as evidence of each aspect. The opening, with DJay talking about "dogs" is especially poignant: here we've got a guy that's not just a pimp, but a philosopher. However, there are also moments of WTF: the skinny white kid who serves as DJay's DJ kind of screwed up the black vibe and brought things back to a more MTV theme. But I'd say all in all the movie was incredibly entertaining, thought provoking, and very, very well done. Look for more good stuff from both the star (Terrence Howard) and the director (Craig Brewer). Don't listen to the reviews, Hustle and Flow is a worthwhile watch. |
