Great article. And GREAT comparison to Springsteen. To me, the best Gord-ism is the story he told midway through Highway Girl: "'Are you really the messiah' 'Yes I am." That, right there, is pure gold.

i agree, great article. my first concert ever was the hip on the day for night tour in hamilton, my friend's older brother took us. and for better or for worse it's the reason why i read online music zines and spend all my money on records. one thing -- long time running is among the best hip songs ever. EVER.

Remember when Mtv2 actually played videos? For awhile they actually would play "Poets" fairly often, which was of course my only exposure to the Hip since I live in North Carolina. The band seemed sort of like of a Canadian REM to me back then (though now I suspect Gord Downie may be a much better lyricist than Michael Stipe). Anyway...great article. Some one talking about music they really love is always interesting, and a nice change of pace from people talking about what they hate.

im sure its a great article...your four comments so far have confirmed that, all FOUR of them agree great article, so i guess it must be, great, because four canadians have said so, unlike the 2700 other stylus readers with logins that havent bothered to comment, at least the article got four responses, which is one better than three, and four better than none.

Terrorist, the reason no one else wrote is because there is nothing less attractive than a feature on Tragically HIp.

Wow. What a wonderful article. I haven't listened to about 90% of the songs discussed in several years, and every song title sets off little snippets and electricity in my head. No matter how jaded I get, I will never be too cool for the Tragically Hip. I really like that line from "Butts Wigglin'," and only now am I struggling to remember where I first heard it: *in my opinion/the drug is ready*

Terrorist, you are so right. I was laughing all week at what was only TWO comments until yesterday. Finally, Stylus succeeded in bringing us a feature piece which inspires absolutely no controversy.
