Just lateley I've been getting into De La Soul (partly because of "Feel Good, Inc." and partly because of my Tribe obsession), and I really like everything I've heard of them (which is 3 Ft, DLS Is Dead, and Grind Date). I'm surprised at how different some of the 80s and early 90s stuff sounds compared to Grind Date. Even their voices sound a bit different, especially on "Feel Good." But I like all of it. I'm trying to figure out where they changed direction-would this one be a good start?

Glad you're feeling De La Soul. It's a bit unfortunate that Tribe was so much more successful, in my opinion. Buhloone Mind State was the last De La Soul record that Prince Paul produced. It has more in common with the first two, with much more creative sampling and lyrical content than the post-Paul stuff. With the next album, Stakes is High, they dropped Prince Paul and publicly stated that they were going to "simplify" their music (ie. less skits, in-jokes, extended analogies, um... creativity) to reach a wider audience. They were around 18 back when 3 Ft. dropped, and now they had houses and kids they needed to pay for. Best track on Buhloone: Breakadawn (bad-ass Michael Jackson sample!)
