Sunday mornings, I lay in bed with my wife to be and we share headphones and those two songs together. Your thoughts were brilliant.

Beautifully written. I couldn't agree more. It's a perfect ending to one of my favorite albums.

Great piece, Ian. Passing Afternoon makes me cry too (starting with 'and she's chosen where to be, though she's lost her wedding ring'), because its arch so huge and universal yet so simple, and the melody is almost unbearably beautiful. The piano outro is great as well, like taking the first steps into oblivion.

It's the "Trapeze Swinger" that does me in. Listened to it on repeat the day my Grandad died. For me, it's apparently less what Beam sings, and more how he sings that conveys that sense of grief, loss, and sadness mixed with comfort and warmth. I'm driving 16 hours to see him play in Washington this summer, but I'm not sure if it's for the concert, or as a sort of pilgrimage. Wonderful article, Ian.

"sit and think of me" during Passing Afternoon always tears me up.
