Another good piece Nick, and informative links to (esp the visual comparisons). However, Re: Coldplay, I'm not sure if Fix You does ramp up the tempo in the latter segment, its just a shift from organ to full band I think, at the same stodgy tempo. I've only actually heard this on the radio so I've not studied this in depth but I believe this to be the case...

You're right about "Fix You," remnant.

I must have somehow missed your "1st" part. It was an excellent article, thank you. Btw, Californication damaged my speakers. Actually i think you should be able to sue these moronic engineers. Then the whole loudness race would be solved in a very short time. But i really think, for most people music and movies is mainly or at least much more than it used to be about consumption and ownership. Back in the days the bourgeoisie used to buy books, never read them but put them up in a shelf where their guests can see them. Now this representation and self-definition is carried out by DVD- and CD-shelves. Although i have to admit that i'm guilty too. The difference however is, that i really do love the movies and music. But sometimes when you listen to something your attention is not staying on the music. And one reason to blame is overcompression. However i think that is what most people really want. At least they don't want anything else. So i guess we'll have to live with it. Good thing is that it almost can't get any worse nowadays. I hope.
