Goo dinterview with an inspired label - I hope everyone's taken notes of those bands Andrew Hartwell mentioned - The Urfaust/Circle of Oroubouros split single earlier in the year is really something that should cross over from the murky underworld in the greater conscious. Drudkh have been releasing consistently great folkish BM for a while, very atmospheric and bouyant. Has anyone heard You Should Have Slain Me from the Battlecruizer label? If not, why not - a 20 minute repetitive riff that outdoes anything Oneida have (literally) churned out and Dead Reptile Shrine are ungodly atmospherics in extremis.

Don't know why you've taken Subliminal genocide to rap Malefic across the knuckles for repetition when he's still peaking - plenty other bands should be taken to task for repeating themselves without the inspiration that Malefic has. And I'm assuming your sign-off of the CoO Shores album is meant in a good way because it's great. Let me just add the Execution's Down Below The Fog on Todestrieb Records is well worthy of a mention - dense to the point of impenetrable, revealing deeper layers after every listen, demanding of active listening, drawing your ears into the mists of it, peering through the swirling noise. One of the years best and one to get wuick before it sells out.

This column still to scary for the hipsters to leave any comments below though, huh?

I don't think it's that the column is too scary, meatbreak; I think it's that we don't cover any hipster metal - barring the conspicuous inclusions of Xasthur and Sunn this month. How'd the date w/ Shewulf Jess Graves go?

Yeah, there was a fair few responses to the Mastadon review - Perhaps a review of Agalloch's Ashes Against The Grain may coax them across the border? I hear lots of Mogwai and Interpol in that, amongst other unlikely referenecs in a dark metal album. Your always forgiven for including SunnO - I'm a bit disappointed with Alter. It sounds like two bands meeting in the middle rather than joining forces. La Mort Noir Dans Esch Alzette on the other hand - woah - Reptile Lux is like It Took The Night To Belive but even more claustrophobic if that's conceivable.

The scars from Graves are permanent.
