 I would cite the comic book series "Loveless" from D.C.'s Vertigo imprint as a point of comparison to the films cited here. The series echoes the nihilism of writer Brian Azzarello's continuing work on "100 Bullets". Also, it focuses on Arkansas after the Civil War, but somehow introduces 'Wild West' conventions in the mix.

 props to grodinsky on 'three burials of melquiades estrada' - Tommy Lee Jones proved that you can make a movie about the mythic of the West without getting a cowboy story snared in it.
