I remember this being one of the most widely-available imports in the US upon its release. Even the dopey stores at the mall would carry it, which I never understood.

Why is CW Perry always crossing my way? I don´t know this album, maybe I forot it, maybe I should have heared it. Police have had two, three good songs. The band was not good. Their reunion is a bad joke. Sting´s solo pop albums over the last years were uninspired, pretentious, and a bag full of kitsch! They contain everything i don´t like in the "world pop song area".

Albums like this one are the reason people think they don't like jazz...or like jazz, depending on your politics (as L.C. might say). All of the players mentioned--pilfered from such "classic" jazz line-ups as the Branford Marsalis band, early 80s Weather Report and post-81 comeback Miles--don't really play jazz, don't like jazz and are pretty much all cretins. Branford, of course, would win notoriety for fronting the tonight show band and getting paid by Ken Burns to say nasty things about Cecil Taylor and "Bitches Brew". Weather Report, to quote Brian Eno and florenz6 "was not good" (not even Joni Mitchel and Charles Mingus could save them), and post-comeback Miles probably would have thought that Sade was a great jazz singer. Oh wait. My mistake. That was Thomas Inskeep.

re: jmp23 - Sting took advantage of these maintream jazz freaks who really belonged to the ultra-conservative crew of Ken Burns and his reactionary take on jazz. But, well, jmp, Brian Eno was a big fan of early Weather Report, and "Myterious Traveller", f.e., is a masterpiece.

I'm not sure 'bring on the night' merits this treatment because it really is only kicking when the police material comes on, but I respect the effort, since sting's solo stuff is antimatter to the critics' usual matter...well, antimatter to anti-antimatter, anyway. branford marsalis' rap is embarrassing, but so is debbie harry's on 'rapture' and that song still rocks.
