 I remember when this came out and it was viewed as a serious return to stripped-down balladeering . . . man, the things we thought were stripped down in the '80s. Still like the album, though.

 the only reason this album isn't as revered as Nebraska, or really spoken in the same terms is coz of the horrible 80s production on half the tracks. i wish i could see (hear?) through them, but it totally turned me off the LP - yeah, it IS amazing the things we thought were stripped down in the '80s.
