I'm always interested to hear the O/S view on Smellstinky; do they have a big presence on the airwaves/indie scenes?

"Actually, what Polyphonic Spree ought to do next is to up the ante on Architecture in Helsinki with a full-on, double disc twee-prog musical!" Are you insane, man? That would undoubtedly mark the definitive, beginning of the end, for human civilization.

"(There’s nothing keeping people from dancing for a minute and a half rather than three and a half minutes.)" The great minute and half dance of daily inspiration that comes after you finish dressing up and before you go out...

Despite how much I'm loving this, I will nevereverever listen to this in any situation where somebody else can hear it or, worse yet, see me enjoying it.

Lordy no, aaron. Though I guess on some level I can see why people would like them, even though they make me want to stick pins in my eyes. I mean, if I wanted to listen to faux naif dinky music I'd put the Yooralla ads on repeat - at least they got Venetta Fields in.

so, let me get this straight. you DONT like them? kellie sutherland has a gorgeous voice. this album took me by surprise (kind of like the new of montreal), but it's really really grown on me, and I like the little references back to campy 70's/80's stuff. I enjoyed fingers crossed, too.

I'm with clem on this one: AIH are one of the most frustratingly tedious Australian groups in their 'field'. They're kind of vying with Art Of Fighting in terms of praise-inverse-to-actual-quality.

Kellie could be the group's most significant asset. That little squeak in her voice when she sings the word 'hoping' in "Wishbone" is the greatest individual syllable in the history of music.

I was really, really surprised by how ace they were live. They do tread a fine line between wondrously childlike and gratingly childish, but fall often enough on the good side to make all the colourful nonsense worthwhile. Fun.

Wow, every time I think of something that remotely original *sounding*, it turns someone beat me to it. Today, it's "twee prog." (To my discredit, "prog twee" was my actual formulation.) Hah, at least it was another Stylus writer that beat me to it.
