Gotta appreciate the Ponys for trying to play more than just 3 chords, but I really don't think this album works. Get Black is pretty righteous, but on the whole, the melodies are very weak and (so far) not particularly catchy. Maybe it'll grow on me...

I'll give that this album certainly is more "mature" than their last album, and it's good to see that they're trying to do more than let's kill ourselves, but all in all it's just boring. It's not that there's less energy, it's that there's no energy. It's not that the hooks aren't as big, it's that they're not there. The melodies aren't as strong, and the singing is not as good. Also, more often than not, when they try to experiment with rhythms, it just sounds awkward (Discoteca). I've got nothing against a band going in a different direction from a killer debut (in it for the money, anyone?), but if you mature at the expense of songwriting, where are you? Personally, I don't think even Get Black stands up to the better songs off of Laced With Romance.

This second album is the Mary Ann to Laced With Romance's Ginger. Ginger's flashy and everything, but Mary Ann is smarter and still hot, albeit with a more subtle beauty. So maybe this second album will not be as warmly received on the whole as its predecessor, but that's fine. The deserters are just going to be the ones who need their art spoon-fed to them like little babies.

I had little to no faith in this band after their first release. I found Laced With Romace to be completely over-rated and it seems that by trimming the fat on their new record they have really put out a pretty stellar record here. Worth the purchase.
