| Um, people might want to skip this short, "phoned-in" review and read the much better review offered by pitchfork. I'm starting to think that the reviewers at stylus don't really like music all that much. Oh, and that Goldfrapp remix is brilliant. |
| This review gets a BOO minus.
| Here we go again! It's been awhile since there's been a good, long, pointless "Pitchfork vs. Stylus" battle in the reader comments here, but I see we've got one off to a good start already. |
| That's because this one deserves it. This review is hilariously bad; thanks for the 3 paragraphs of banal history with a few more sentences of "This one is spacey," "This one is not cool." And the Goldfrapp and UNKLE remixes were created on autopilot? That might have been my impression if I had listened to half of them while doing my homework, tuned in later and thought to myself: hey, this still sounds the same. Critical listening reveals two of the most exciting remixes; the DFA have mastered the art of dynamics and expansion, but don't listen to my rambling. Read the Pitchfork review. |
| i do agree that DFA shouldn't release so much of their remixes so quickly, but overall i haven't been interested in the remixes, but i have been impressed with their original releases. i guess i've just been into different stuff for remixes. other than getting that right this review is on autopilot. |
| There's not much comparison between Pfork and Stylus. I think Stylus has balls in that they allow posting, but Pfork at least concentrates on something. Stylus is too schizo imo. To diss one over the other is foolhardy, however. There are times when Stylus can offer a great respite from Pfork, and vice versa. The reviewers here seem more realistic with their likes and dislikes, while the Pfork writers seem more concerned with reviews that will serve as writing samples on future applications to Rolling Stone or other high paying journalism gigs. Although, this comp is better than a B-, but I must ask myself if I would still like it if I didn't listen to the DFA religiously...yes, yes I would. |
| i think indie dance's popularity is due in large part to pitchfork and sytlus and many other sites like them. the reason these websites suck sometimes is not that the writers are bad or arrogant, but because all the writers are constantly seeking the Next Big Thing, or the New Direction for indie music, or whateverthefuck. because they see culture moving so quickly, they feel the need to define it as it moves, which is how "dancepunk" was able to alter the indie landscape well before most indie fans had even heard it. this was how freakfolk was set loose from the coffeehouses where it belonged (paving the way for its death). BUT MOVEMENTS AREN'T DEFINED BY CRITICS AND JUST BECAUSE SOME BROOKLYN HIPSTERS HAVE CONVINCED SOME CHICAGO HIPSTERS HOW IMPORTANT THEIR WORK IS, DOESN'T MEAN THAT I'M ABOUT TO START TAKING THEIR REGRESSIVE AND TACTLESS GENRE SERIOUSLY. to anyone who likes dfa and hates what i've just said, i'm sorry i've offended you, but to me all this stuff starts to sound old by the fourth spin. |
| i dont't really like the dfa, but I'm curious to hear their remix of "Colours." The Hot Chip remix on Chapter One was one of the only things they seemed to pull off well |
| It's the afternoon updates....When's it going to be pirate week, dammit? Argggghhhh!!! |
| this review does indeed get a Boo minus. I would go so far as to say DooDoo minus. And honestly, "spacy?" This adjective should be removed from whatever music criticism thesaurus these dudes use forever. And the Unkle mix, "on autopilot?" Wow. Really, WOW. I bet he's never danced a second in his life. He's totally the dude who goes to clubs and talks to his bros about Tortoise all night. this review is gaytastic. |
| Tortoise aren't the enemy. |
| (1) As long as I can practice my right of free speech, let me say that Cokemachineglow.com is my favorite music-review web site. (2) This review is pretty bad; I can't tell if that B- means "I kinda liked it, but I'm not sure if everyone else will" or "It's technically good, but it doesn't make me move my ass". The review doesn't really expand on that; Hutlock just says that DFA shouldn't release so many remixes so quickly (agreed). Whatever. I'll give it a look. |
