Good review. I'd rate it slightly higher perhaps, but having fallen in love with Bleed American at 15, Clarity at 16, and Futures during the worst year of my life at 18, I can see exactly where you're coming from. This isn't as good as any of them, and it felt like a huge disappointment at first, but it's a good upbeat pop album which is better than nothing and which once again matches my own personal zeitgeist perfectly. Big Casino is one of their best songs hands down, and I do think Here It Goes and Dizzy are great.

Don't you mean Dan Shaughnessy as a curse milking hack, rather than David Halberstam? One's the "curly headed boyfriend," the other wrote The Best and The Brightest. Which one's really the hack?

Kenyon- you're totally right. Not sure how that slipped my mind.

i was a big fan of these guys in static era, and when clarity came out, i hated it. then i loved it and had seen them play "sweetness" enough to have it in my head all the time. when bleed american came out, i lost all interest. although, i am on a strange Elliot kick right now, if they had put out "False Cathedrals" in 2002 instead of 2000 they would have been as big as jimmy eat world.

I enjoyed this review and related to much of it, but comparing New Miserable Experience to Dizzy Up the Girl does a real disservice to the former. I DID obsess over it, and I know I'm not alone; that was a great fucking album, or at least an album full of great moments, that easily surpasses anything JEW has ever done. Just sayin'.

Odd, J_R_K, I too am on a big Elliott kick right now.
