I was flying through the words of this review, I can only confirm, this is absolutely fantastic music, a sound-model, too, for what would be happening decades later (east of jazz)! Many of the old traditional Miles fans hated his "electric phase" and called records like BIG FUN, ON THE CORNER or GET UP WITH IT his "commericial turn". Well, commercial it was, in a parallel universe! Aside from the wild things, Miles´ ethereal hommage to Duke Ellington, "He Loved Him Madly" (formerly released on GUWI, Pt.1)was a total inspirtaion for Brian Eno while working his "On Land"-masterpiece in New York. Still today, trumpet trumpet master Jon Hassell can speak volumes about "On The Corner".

P.S. The starting sequence of the review quoting Hitchcock´s "The Birds" was witty! And the description of Michael Henderson´s bass work perfect! For anybody who will get addicted to this music: Philip Freeman has written a very good and sexy (read:non-academic) book: "Running The Voodoo Down - The Electric Music of Miles Davis"

P.S. I listen to a mini-Miles Davis retrospective on my local jazz station last night (nothing from this period, of course) and realized for the first time why all of his previous fans hated this stuff (I know, I know but I'm strange): it's so punishing. Listening only to this box set for the past week I'm only now beginning to realize how punishing this music (if it can be called music) is.
